The Parkvilla Theatre
In 2010, Alphenaren Lenne Huisman and Hans van Oosten took the initiative for the ‘Serious Music Café Alphen’. They wanted to get more attention for (progressive) rock music and to get in touch with enthusiasts in Alphen and surroundings.
In the café of the Castle, and later café Under The Bridge, CDs and DVDs in the field of especially prog rock were played with friends and fans of this genre. Soon musicians were also invited. This created more publicity and public; that is why the concert agenda was expanded. When the larger bands showed interest in playing at Serious Music Alphen, cooperation with the Parkvilla Theater was sought. This resulted in the first Serious Music Event in 2011.
This proved to be the beginning of a successful collaboration with the Parkvilla Theater. So far, there have been five events and many concerts organized, with now also foreign and professional bands. A special initiative was the award for regional singer / songwriters, with preliminaries in Under The Bridge, foyer performances at the Parkvilla Theater and the grand finale in April 2014. Serious Music Alphen continues to organize smaller concerts, including in café Under The Bridge , but since 2014 also for regional bands / musicians at Stichting Max (youth work) and café de Baronie.
In view of the growth, the activities of Serious Music Alphen were transferred to a foundation in 2013. With the support of PopPlatform Alphen, which provides support for music events in Alphen on behalf of the municipality, and of a growing group of donors (‘friends’), Serious Music Alphen is able to organize special music events in Alphen and surroundings.
Full-length rock theatre
On 21st February 2020, Serious Music Alphen goes back in time with a theatrical show by the British band: The Book Of Genesis. A tribute to one of the best symphonic acts from the seventies, complete with costumes and original instruments.
The Book Of Genesis is an English band that not only revives the music, but also the theatrical side of the world-famous symphonic rock band Genesis. The band focuses on the seventies, when the band with singer Peter Gabriel – later Phil Collins – and guitarist Steve Hackett created a furore with album classics like ‘Foxtrot’, ‘Selling England By The Pound’, ‘The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway’ ‘and’ A Trick Of The Tail ‘.
The Book Of Genesis is widely regarded as the best Genesis
tribute band, not only because of the musical qualities, but also because of original instruments, many historical sculptures, and – of course – the costumes with which Peter Gabriel made a big impression. For connoisseurs: famous creations like ‘The Flower’, ‘Bat Wings’, ‘Magog’ and ‘Crested Britannia’ come back to life this evening. So this is not an ordinary concert, but evening-filling rock theatre at its best.
